HAIR UPDATE : 16 Weeks Post

Hello Ladies

Let me start by saying a big thank you to everyone who voted for me in the Nigerian Blog awards. We just have to seat tight and wait for the results now. Either way it made me so happy to be nominated that I feel like a winner already.

This is a very short and sweet post about whats happening with my hair at the moment. I am currently 16 weeks post and my stretch has been going well. I am following my wig regimen and so far so good. I plan to texlax in 4 weeks time and I am looking forward to it because it means I will be wearing my hair out for a while after I texlax.

When I am following my wig regimen and have a wash day, I sometimes leave my hair out for a few days before putting the wigs back on. I do this when I’ve really missed my hair or haven’t had time to prep my hair for the wigs. I’ve been wearing my hair out for about a week now and decided to re-create a retro style I had seen online.

As soon as I finish typing this and have my dinner, I am going to settle down to create approximately 22 – 24 box braids so I can wear my wig for the next 3 weeks. What is happening with your hair ladies? Do share your updates.

The next blog post will be about how to merge a hair care journey with an exercise/fitness journey. I have written a blog post a while ago about the benefits of exercise for overall health and for hair growth. The next blog post will be about the challenges women who exercise regularly phase and how to deal with the challenges.

Please stop by soon.

Hi, I recently stumbled upon your blog while researching black hair care and i’m sooo glad i clicked on hairducation. I must say you’re doing a great job here. welldone ! My hair had been on a very long painful journey since i started growing it out in 2005 due to lack of knowledge and sheer negligence. After reading your blog posts i have decided to go on a hair journey with a short term goal of attaining healthy shoulder length hair and a long term goal of tailbone long hair. My question is, can i use just water to moisturise. A colleague gave me that advice. Thanks for your help. You’ve one more disciple and i’ll surely spread the good news. 😉

      Hello Annabel
Thank you so much. I am sure you will learn loads from Hairducation and from other blogs too . With time your hair will begin to thrive.
The issues with using water alone to moisturise is that water has a higher ph than our hair. water has a ph of 7 and our hair has a ph of 4.5 to 5.5. This means that water alone might hydrate your hair but your hair fibres will not be in their natural ph range.
You can mix a little bit of glycerine and a very little amount aloe vera juice with water or maybe a little bit of your leave in conditioner with water to create a home made spritz for your hair.
      I hope that helps.

Your hair looks lovely at 16 weeks and I love the simple styles you create while still protecting your ends. I’m currently 8 weeks post and normally stretch to 24 weeks before relaxing but for some reason I will have to reconsider. I’m having a lot of breakage and my hair doesn’t seem to retain moisture. I guess it was under processed from my last relaxer session and hope I will relax better this time.

      Thank you very much Hilda.
Yes last time my new growth was under processed I texlaxed early into my stretch.

You might have to moisturise and seal in smaller sections to ensure that you are reaching all of your hair.
I also tend to use a moisturiser with a more watery consistency when I am deep into my stretch.
It works for me and I hope it helps with your hair too.

Hello Lade! I discovered your blog 3 weeks ago and it instantly inspired me to get started on a healthy hair journey. Before starting I used to relax my hair every 7-8 weeks and between relaxers I didn’t take care of my hair at all, not even a wash and I would straighten about once a week. So my hair is shoulder length but the ends are much thinner. I have been experiencing some breakage and shedding, so my question is how long into your hair journey did it take for you to see a significant reduction in breakage and shedding? I have been following all of your regimen tips including twice daily moisturizing and sealing, protective styling, washing and deep conditioning once a week and air drying. I am also using only products that you have recommended!

      Hey Ashely

I am glad you’ve started a hair journey. The positive results of a hair journey are not always immediate but you should begin to notice some improvements after a few weeks such as gradual reduction in breakage or better moisturised hair….but everyone’s journey is different.
It took a year plus before I saw a vast improvement in my hair. My regimen is a guide but its important to make sure its okay for you and to also experiment with a few products that may work better for your hair.
Really wish you all the best on your journey

Hi lade! Long time no see! Well I did read ur blog but i just didnt comment… So I wanted to ask u a question… Have u tried the creme of nature straight from eden relaxer? I watched lots of youtube vids and it looks amazing! That will be my next relaxer/texturizer… Look it up it comes with a cream and it doesn’t leave ur hair completely straight… And how about your youtube channel, I’m still waiting!☺

      Hello Adanna 🙂
I have heard of the creame of nature eden relaxer but I don’t intend to try it anytime soon. I am happy with what I currently use and only experiment with new products occasionally.
So maybe I will try it one day….
Lol on the YouTube Channel….I still would like to do it but youtube takes even more time and editing …..its on my to do list

Wish you luck in the results to come. Your hair is lovely & smooth even at 16 weeks post. Well as for me,I’m 14weeks post. Braided my hair yesterday since I’ve only been practising my weekly regimen right from Jan 2. & I also used wig regimen for 2weeks along the line. The braid isn’t too tight & I’m so happy about that. Will continue to care for my hair now in braids.

Hi lade, tnx so much for the great job, I hope u win the NBA, u absolutely deserve it, pls I started my hair journey in January after reading this blog and so far it has been great, I am currently 13 weeks post and i kip my hair in braids, kinda following your wig regimen, however I am really confused on how to wash in braids, esp with my new growth, do I loosen the previous braids, untangle and then braid it up again before washing, or wash my hair with the previous braid before detangling? Also do I loosen the braids before deep conditioning or after? Please help, thank you.

Seeing a new post just made my night . After going through almost every article if not all the articles you’ve posted, I decided to start my Hair journey. I started just a week ago and my hair looks and feels so healthy it makes me want to jump and dance. Thanks so much for your wonderful posts. I am currently using ORS to moisturize my hair as suggested from your previous posts, However, because i am 16weeks post and i have so much new growth, i feel like it isn’t watery enough. Can you suggest another moisturizer that is more suitable ?
    thanks so much

      Hello Maryam

Thank you for reading through my blog posts. its great that you have started a hair journey and I am sure that with time your hair will continue to thrive.
S-curl is a lighter moisturiser you can try or you can make your own hair moisturising spritz. there are so many formulas for home made spritz that you can find online.
      Hope that helps

    Hi Lade,

I enjoy learning about your haircare experiences and finding helpful haircare ideas on your website. I find that when I wear wigs, no matter how my hair is braided with wig cap, the wig does not lay flat on my head. There is a bulge at the top is my head and wig does not look natural, I would like to be able to wear more than half wigs. Do you have any suggestions, on ways that I can wear wigs without the bulge?

Hi, I have been looking at your website for a few weeks and I wanted to congratulate you on a great job! It was unthinkable that black girls could grow hair this long!! I am glad I found out it is possible. and thanks to that I am starting my hair journey as well 🙂
I have a small question. For those of us who do not wear wigs, what is the next best thing to keep the hair resting for that long?

      Hello Jaria

      Thank you thank you.
Yes its great to know that we CAN grow our hair long IF we choose to.
Braids and weaves are okay ( if your scalp and hair line can take it) and can help to rest our hair for a long period so long as they are installed and removed properly and you take care of your hair when you have the extensions in.
Please see the blog posts on the right side of the blog in which I set out how to care for your hair with hair when wearing hair extensions.

    hi lade,

I just physically visited your office on saturday the 25th of April. My hair used to be long and thick in my teens and 20’s.After years of poor hair care pratices,2 children,20kg weightloss and more bad hair pratices, it finally thinned.

I officiall started my hhj in dec 2014.I take hair, skins and nails,10000mcg of biotin, msm, collagen since jan 2015.My hair is improving but my edges don’t show much progress.
i use jbco to deep conditon and use sulphate free shampoos weekly.your manager persuaded me to buy the red roots pimento oil which i use daily to massage my edges?I stretch my relaxers for 16weeks as i am not fully committed to going natural.

What else do you advice? And what specific products to you recommend for thinning hair.i have not braided or fixed a weavon since Nov 2014

    Thank you

Hello Lade im soo glad i met you and this blog! I started my hair journey about a year ago and im a little past shoulder length now. Wohooo! Anyways id like to have a look at how you arrange your box braids under the wigs cos id like to braid my hair myself…some hairdressers are so unforgiving and dont take time with my hair. Thanks so much for this great blog. God bless you
