RELAXER UPDATE

Hello Ladies,

I am back with my first relax/texlax this year. I relaxed my hair after a 5 month and 4 days stretch. The stretch went well. I made more effort to keep my hair moisturised and didn’t push back any wash days and my hair feels and looks better than it has in a while.

I followed my usual relaxer/texlax day routine which I have discussed before but i will set it out again in this post . On my texlax day I complete the following steps:

  • Divide my hair in 5 section, 2 at the front and 3 at the back
  • I detangled each section thoroughly and this took hours by the way.
  • I applied black castor oil mixed with olive oil to my scalp and hair from root to tip.
  • I mixed 3 quarters of my relaxer ( Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Relaxer Normal Strength) with 2.5 teaspoons of olive oil.
  • My sister applied the relaxer to the new growth in the back sections. It takes her 6 minutes max. When she was through I applied the relaxer to the front new growth and this also takes me 6 minutes max
  • I smoothen the relaxer into my new growth for 5 minutes ( I DO NOT use a comb to smoothen or comb the relaxer through my hair)
  • After the 17 minutes are up ( 12 minutes application plus 5 minutes of smoothening) i rinse thoroughly and shampoo with a neutralizing at least three times to make sure all the relaxer is removed.
  • I then proceed to deep conditioning, leave-in conditioning and blow drying.
  • I then took a few pictures to share with all you lovely ladies 🙂

Please note that this is what works for me and helps me achieve the degree of texture release that I like.
If you would like to use my methods you are welcome to BUT please make necessary adjustments to suit your hair, for example if you stretched for 3 months you won’t have as much new growth and may need less relaxer. Or if your hair is not as coarse as mine you may need to decrease the application and smoothening time.

I will be trimming off about two inches on my next wash day because iv e got to keep my ends in shape and they need a trim. Overall it was a good texlax day and I on to the next stretch. I am glad to have my hair out for a while, I had missed it.

How are your hair journeys going? Have you relaxed your hair recently? How did it go?

x

Lade

Hello lade, your hair looks beautiful. i tetlaxed a week back after 5 months and it was fuller and looked healthy. Thanks for the tips. Please i want to know if the canta argan oil leave in conditioner is a protein/moisturising conditioner because i read on your post that the cantu shea butter leave in conditioner is a protein conditioner.

      Thank you Salma

I am glad your texlax went well and that your hair is in a good state. I believe the cantu argan oil is supposed to be protein free leave in conditioner but to be sure it is best you look through the ingredients and see if it contains protein.
Unfortunately I cant recall what the ingredients are at the moment.
      Hope that’s helps

Your hair looks lovely. Please which neutralising shampoo do you use? finding a neutralising shampoo here in Awka is proving to be quite difficult. I’d really appreciate a reply.

      hello Kuukua

You know how most salons tend to use a small comb to comb the relaxer through the new growth,,,,, I don’t do that. what I do instead is use my hands to pull the rellexer through the new growth of my hair…I do this section by section
I dp this for 5 minutes only so that my hair doesn’t get too straight….
I hope this makes it clearer

    Hello Lade,
Thanks for the inspiration to go on a healthy hair journey, I just started a few weeks ago.
My question is, since u dint use comb to smoothen the relaxer, at what point did u have to use comb? I’d be glad to get a reply.
    Thanks

      Helo Onyi

I only use the comb AFTER the relaxer process is completed.
after I have wshed with neutralising shampoo and deep conditioned, I apply my leave in conditioner and detangle and comb at that point

I am very careful and make sure my hair doesn’t get tangled when it is being washed( with the neutralising shampoo) and deep conditioned….it takes a lot of time but over the years I have mastered it.

      I hope that helps

Hi Lade, am so loving your looonnggg hair and am determined to grow mine too. I had used profective hair relaxer in the past for about 5 yrs and it was OK but it burns my scalp terribly. I currently use dark & lovely kit, it burns my scalp a little too. Am thinking of switching to ORS hair repair no lye relaxer. Please what is your take on the switch, is it a yay or nay? Cheers

And when is wash day?Your reply will work a lot! Tanks

Very informative. You are a beautiful woman and appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Do you use lye or no lye organic root stimulator regular relaxer? Does lye vs. no lye. loosens the curl better than the other? Thank you

      Hello JC
      Thank you so much!!!
I use the lye relaxer that comes in a green jar.
Both lye and no-lye formulas are designed to straighten hair rather than loosen curl patterns.
Texturisers are designed to loosen curl patterns BUT only if you naturally already have a curl pattern.
Bothe lye and no-lye relaxers have different effects of different ladies hair, choosing one it depends on your own hair and scalp

I hope the above makes sense.

Hi Lade, I just recently texturized my hair using the no lye Organic relaxer, after 6 months, can I switch to lye relaxers? What chelating shampoo do you think I can use too?

      Hello Tosin

It is okay to switch from a no-lye relaxer to a lye one…..so long as you follow safe relaxer/relaxing practices.
I a not sure why you would like to use a chelating shampoo if you are switching to a lye relaxer. Lye relaxers DON’T tend to leave mineral deposits on the hair that need a chelating shampoo. If you would like a chelating shampoo, please search online for some brands and read reviews written about them before choosing one to buy.
      I hope that helps
