Grapeseed Oil: You Should Try It!

Hello ladies

I am so sorry for the mini hiatus.  Its been a busy month and honestly I have been slacking a little but I am trying to catch up with everything including blogging.  I hope I am forgiven.
So I unintentionally began to use grapeseed oil on my hair a few months back and now that I realise how great it is, I am surprised it is not used as much as coconut or olive oil by ladies on a hair journey.
I hope that this post will encourage you to try it.

What Is Grapeseed Oil and Why It Is Good for Hair

Wine is made from grapes and the seeds of the grapes are usually unwanted by wine manufactures.
Grapeseed oil is obtained from these unwanted seeds.  Because grapeseed oil is a by-product of the wine making industry it tends to be relatively cheap.
Grapeseed oil is  rich in Vitamin e and ceramides.  It is light weight and does not have a strong odour.  Some of the great things that grapeseed oil does for hair includes

  • The ceramides helps to smoothen the cuticle layer making hair look less frizzy.
  • It blesses our hair which a shine!!!!
  • It is a very good at keeping moisture sealed in but does not weigh hair down like many oils tend to.  It not sticky or greasy
  • It has antioxidant and contains fatty acids which some research has claimed promotes hair growth, strengthens hair strands and minimise thinning.
  • It helps in the fight against split ends.
  • A little off point but its great for your skin too.

How To Use Grapeseed Oil

Grapeseed oil can be used as a

1)      Hot oil treatment

2)      Sealant

3)      Scalp massage oil

4)      Oil rinse

My Experience with Grapeseed Oil

I used to use olive oil as my sealant and although I liked it I felt my hair was a little weighed down by it.
I switched to using coconut oil for a few years and although it had a lot of benefits I did not think it helped me seal in moisture for long enough.  I decided olive oil was better and went back to it.

I actually purchased grapeseed oil for use on my skin but I tried it on my hair when I ran out of both olive and coconut oil.   My, my, my……the difference I saw in my hair that week made me a convert.

My hair retained moisture a lot better but my hair was not weighed down at all. It honestly made my hair look more vibrant and it felt smoother too.  Over time I noticed that my hair strands felt better.
I have been using grapeseed oil as a sealant for about 6 months now and my final verdict is that it has made my hair a better version of itself. I honestly wish I had tried it sooner

I should say that I have been more consistent with my regimen and have been drinking more water for a few months now and this probably also contributed to the improved state of my hair.

What do you use to seal the moisture into your hair? Have you tried a new sealant lately?

The next post will be a bun of the month post.
Come back soon

    Hi Lade,
I read your experience and it motivated me. Please where can I purchase the grapeseed oil from? and can I use coconut oil as the hot oil treatment?

    Thanks.

      Hello Tope

Thank you so much and please accept my apologies for the late response.
I buy my grapeseed oil from a store called Sizzelle. They also have a an online store and deliver throughout Nigeria. Some supermarkets also sell grapeseed oil. Just look in the oils sectionie near other oils like olive oil or sesame oil.
Ensure you buy the 100% cold pressed grapeseed oil rather than something that has been mixed with other oils.

Yes coconut oil can be used as a hot oil treatment….simply pay attention to how your hair reacts to it before including it permanently on your regimen.

Hello Laden. I’m thankful to God that He led me to your blog because i had been seriously praying for long hair, after having spent money great hair products without any tangible results on my hair. So 2 questions; 1. Where can I buy grapeseed oil in Nigeria. 2. I have a very sensitive scalp so lye relaxers are a no no for me, I use kids no lye relaxers and so for texlaxing I decided to buy Just for me no lye texture softener, I hope it will give me the desired texlaxed results. What’s your opinion about texture softeners

      Hello Sylva

Thank you so so much for your kind words.

Every persons hair and scalp reacts differently to chemical products. I have never used a texture softner so cannot speak from personal experience. I know some women have used it with success and some have had problems with its use like any other chemical.

I would suggest that you look up reviews on youtube and then decide if you want to go down that route.
I would also suggest that you ensure your scalp is well oiled before relaxing to reduce the risk of burning.

      Hope that helps

I have been using natural nigerian’s grapeseed oil since last year and I agree with your verdict. I also use it mixed with vit E oil as my night face moisturiser. Of all the oils I’ve used, grapeseed oil tops the list.

Thank you i have finally found the LUSTER’S SCURL NO DRIP MOISTURISER here in JOHANNESBURG after searching for it high and low. I will also try the GRAPESEED oil, can i use the extra virgin grape seed oil from the cooking oil asle or it has to be from the hair and essential section sold in smaller bottles?

      Hello Maggie

I am glad you managed to find the S-Curl. But please note that you can also experiment with other good quality moisture products that may be more readily available.

Yes you can use extra virgin grapeseed from the cooking aisle.
Grapessed oil is not an essential oil so I doubt it will be sold in those tiny essential oils bottles.

Hope that helps and happy hair journey

Honestly Lade you are a gift from God. I’m a final year medical student with ‘looming’ exams but my hair issues have been all up in my face so I had to search online for quickie solutions and behold I stumbled upon your blog lol.

I love your enthusiasm and your story is inspiring. And the best thing is-you relax your Hair!! I love the natural sisters-almost all my friends are into it. But I have neither the gut, gene or generous time for it. And I do actually like the silkiness and malleablity of relaxed hair. Thanks for paying it forward. I intend being a faithful disciple as soon as my finals are over.

Great job and more Grace to your elbow 😉

I have loads of natural friends too but I really don’t see myself transitioning any time soon.

I hope your exams go well and that you” be back on here soon

Lade thank you for the wealth of information that you provide. I am sooo grateful my hair is thriving except for my thinning edges which was caused by postpartum shedding, how can I recover my edges its sooo bad. And yes I can attest to the fact that grapseed oil works wonders , I used it on my 2year olds hair by accident and I loved the result and that was it.

      Hello Kike

I am glad your hair is doing well and that you have fallen in love with grapeseed oil the way I have.
Post partum shedding is a bit of a waiting game, eventually the shedding should return to your normal levels and your edges will start to regrow
In the interim don’t do anything that will stress your edges unnecessarily.
      all the best

Unfortunately for me, my scalp hates it but my hair loves it… I don’t know whether to endure or give it up. It works best as a sealant for me.

awwww…well maybe you can use it as a sealant only and avoid it touching your scalp too much.
